An SEO strategy should be part of every business’s marketing strategy. It increases your online visibility and helps you earn website traffic from the right people. AKA, the people actually interested in your services. 

Maybe you’re wondering if blogs are worth the investment. The short answer is yes – blogs can have a huge impact on your SEO and search rankings. In this article, I’ll explain why blogs are good for SEO and give you some tips to get started on blogging.

 

The Importance of Blogs for SEO

Let’s first talk about why blogs are important for your SEO goals. Google loves to see websites being updated often. Old websites = old content that isn’t relevant to search results anymore. Google wants to know you’re making an effort to provide value to its users (and your future clients). One of the best ways to update your website is with blogs. You’re providing valuable information and answering user questions.

Fresh Content

Search engines value fresh, relevant content. The main goal of Google is to provide its users with the best search results possible. Imagine how frustrated you would feel if you searched for something and got served an article from 2012. You want something from the last year or so, right? Consistently writing blogs with fresh and valuable content is how you show Google you’re a source to be trusted.

Targeting Keywords

Writing blogs allows you to target specific keywords. Every page on your website should only be optimized for one keyword. Given a standard website only has 5-7 main pages, that doesn’t give you many opportunities to rank for multiple keywords. However, you can publish as many blogs as you want! And each blog is an opportunity to rank for a new keyword relevant to your business.

Build Authority

Blogs help you build authority. The more you write about your niche/industry, the more often you’ll be shown in search results and be seen as an expert in your field. You’ll also start to be recognized as authoritative by your peers. High-quality blogs have a better chance of being linked from other reputable sources as a resource. Then, you gain traffic from those sites, too.

Blogs are a crucial part of an effective SEO strategy. These are a few ways to ensure your blogs are set up for success.

Create Quality Content

With the rise of AI, more and more junk content is being published, and Google is starting to create stricter quality standards. Always write for the reader first, and Google second. Create content someone actually wants to read instead of trying to rank first for a keyword because writing just for keywords won’t work anymore. Aim to write the best blog on a specific topic. Continually update it with new and fresh content, and you’ll gradually move up the search rankings.

Blog SEO Optimization with Keywords

Blogs need to be optimized for SEO so Google knows when to show your content. You don’t want to write a blog about the difference between a full-time CMO and a fractional CMO and show up on Google for burger joints in your area. 

Blog SEO optimization allows you to target specific keywords to gain additional traffic from that term, so you can somewhat control who is landing on your website. Each blog should target one keyword, even though it might show up in multiple search results. Add that keyword naturally throughout your blog as many times as you can. 

Internal Linking

Adding links to other pages on your website helps Google better understand your site structure and what other content relates to a new blog. It’s like telling a story. After reading one article, what might the reader (or Google) want to know more about? Add as many internal links to your blog as you can, as long as they make sense with the rest of the content.

Plan Your Blog Content Strategy

Brainstorm topic ideas based on your audience’s interests and your expertise. Here are some places to get blog topic inspiration:

  • Keyword research
  • Instagram stories – polls, question boxes, etc.
  • Answer the Public
  • ChatGPT
  • Frequent client questions
  • People Also Ask section of Google

Stay Consistent

A question I get often is “How often should you blog for SEO?” There’s no real answer. Remember how I said Google likes to see you consistently updating your website? That means you need to be consistently writing blogs. Pick a schedule that’s realistic for you. Ideally, you should be blogging weekly, once a month at a minimum. Pick a day to publish and stick to it.

Promote Your Blog

Even though you’ve implemented SEO best practices for blogs, you still need to do your part and promote your blog. These are some ways you can do that:

  • Send it to family and friends
  • Include it in emails to your subscribers
  • Share it on social media

Repurpose The Content

Another reason why blogs are good for SEO? You can reuse the content on other platforms! Since blogs are long-form pieces of content, there are a ton of ways you can reuse them to save time on other marketing efforts. I love batch creating content from my blog posts. These are our favorite ways to repurpose blog content:

  • Social media posts (stories, carousels, reels, and static posts)
  • Email content
  • YouTube videos
  • Podcast topics
  • Infographics
  • Compile multiple blogs into an ebook

By now, you should know why blogs are good for SEO. It gives you consistent, fresh content to share on Google. You’re answering questions people are searching for, therefore, attracting your target audience. It also helps you build authority on Google and within your network.
